PAN Parenting

parents of all nations

Pan Parenting is hosted by Liz Woz, a American writer, educator, and mother raising biracial children in Rome, Italy. She created the podcast as a quest to eliminate fear from her parenting and embrace a more courageous way of life for herself and her family. In a year of conversations, she will talk to parents around the world to learn what gifts the circumstances of their parenting have given them.

Now more than ever, parenting can be a challenging, at times isolating, experience. And fear can send the walls closing in even more viciously. And for those raising children outside of their home culture - the expats, the immigrants, the diplomats, the refugees, the deployed, the wanderers - the challenges take on a different particularity, and the isolation, a more pronounced sting.

Despite the undeniable challenges, though, parents abroad also know the great gifts their foreignness bestows - in times of calm and of crisis. PAN Parenting is a quest. It is also a repository for those gifts, perhaps fear’s antidote:

  • The gift of living, just as ones child does, in that constant state of wonder and discovery that characterizes not only travel, but childhood - our first and most significant cultural immersion.

  • The gift of developing some of life’s most meaningful relationships in a place whose unfamiliarity renders choices less prescribed, facilitating a different kind of self-reflection and intentionality.

  • The gift of experiencing another way.

In this moment of Global Crisis as all of us - regardless of our location - are experiencing something utterly new in a more literal and unsettling form of isolation any of us have ever encountered before.

Still, the gifts persist. Always waiting to be unwrapped, even if in darkness. PAN(demic)Parenting mines these gifts, finding within them the humor and wisdom that can help keep us all afloat. With their insider-outsiders’ views of parenting culture around the globe, guests will be enlisted to help Liz (and maybe you) find a better way… away from fear.
